GROUP MAKES KEY HIRES AND BREAKS GROUND FOR TWO BOSTON HOSPITALS

BOSTON, MA—Shawmut has announced two new projects and key additions to the management team for its growing Healthcare and Life Sciences division. Since hiring a director of the division in December, the team has added a senior project manager and a project manager while maintaining a full project pipeline including high-profile clients such as Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center and Boston Medical Center.

Shawmut broke ground on May 12 at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center’s Bowdoin Street Health Center in Dorchester, MA. Attended by Boston Mayor Martin Walsh, the groundbreaking ceremony celebrated the commencement of the renovation of clinical and support spaces within the health center and creation of a new wellness center and additional examination rooms. Shawmut’s work will allow the center to better serve the needs of the community.

Shawmut also recently broke ground at Boston Medical Center on a 35,000 square foot addition to the Moakley Building. The project includes the new construction of a 31,000 square foot building with three stories above grade, a basement, and a penthouse unit. The team will also renovate an additional 4,000 square feet to connect the addition to the existing building. The project is part of BMC’s Institutional Master Plan, and will enable the much needed expansion of the emergency, trauma, and centralized surgical units, and will house the audiology and digestive disorder departments.

“Since coming on board here at Shawmut we have experienced tremendous growth in the healthcare and life sciences market,” said David Surette, director of Shawmut Design and Construction’s Healthcare and Life Sciences division. “I attribute this to the hard work of our team members and the need in this sector of the industry for a construction firm that can work seamlessly within sensitive hospital environments while integrating new work into existing and uninterruptable infrastructure."

The Healthcare and Life Sciences division has also strengthened its management team with two key new hires. Richard Coe will join Shawmut as senior project manager of the division. In this role, Coe will be engaged in preconstruction and construction services for clients. Prior to joining Shawmut, Coe was a construction administrator at TRO Jung |Brannen in Boston for fourteen years. During this time, his client experience spanned numerous hospitals and other institutional and commercial clients throughout New England. Coe graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design with dual degrees of B.Arch. and B.F.A.

Shawmut also welcomes project manager Kate Simons to the team’s Providence office. Simons will manage projects at top hospitals, healthcare providers, and life sciences companies across New England. Prior to joining Shawmut, Simons managed construction of both large and small projects within the healthcare industry. Her past client experience includes Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center.
