Shawmut Announces Recently Completed and Ongoing Work at New England Baptist Hospital

Boston — March 19, 2007 — Shawmut Design and Construction, a $675 million national construction management firm, has recently completed several projects at New England Baptist Hospital (NEBH), and has several others in progress, all in partnership with Tsoi/Kobus & Associates, Inc. in Cambridge, Mass.

NEBH, located in the Mission Hill neighborhood of Boston, is a not-for-profit, 140-bed acute care hospital specializing in orthopedic surgery. The following projects represent the most recent projects we have worked on during the long-standing 13-year relationship we have shared with NEBH:

Recently Completed Work:

Interior Renovation:
Responding to an increase in growth and a commitment to patient satisfaction, NEBH initiated a comprehensive, multi-year renovation plan, which Shawmut has been continuously working to complete. Two years ago, Shawmut began these renovations as a floor-by-floor renovation project - with the project team completing one wing a week - eventually renovating 50,000 square feet of existing patient rooms, exam rooms, and offices. Since this was a sensitive, occupied renovation project, Shawmut took special care to coordinate patient, doctor and technology moves with minimal disruption. These renovations required Shawmut to work on a fast-track schedule, at times necessitating 24-hour shifts within the operational hospital, and required extensive planning and flexible approaches. Aside from patient rooms, exam rooms and office renovations, Shawmut has also renovated the Hospital’s main corridor, gift shop, lobby and cafeteria.

Department of Medicine Renovation:
In 2005, Shawmut completed a complete renovation of the Department of Medicine in the Brigham Building. This unit offers a full range of services from diagnostic procedures to treatment of cardiac disease. This project was the second phase in an ongoing interior renovation project, completed on a fast-track schedule within an occupied building; the scope of work included tile and carpet flooring, millwork, acoustical ceilings, plaster patching, exam rooms, emergency power, call system, and new M/E/P systems.

Operating Room 10 Renovation:
The renovation of Operating Room 10 required the removal of one of the outside walls of the Jenks Building so it could be extended 12 feet (for a total addition of 400 square feet) to accommodate the installation of new equipment. New space-saving wall and ceiling mounted surgical equipment was installed, along with new sanitary rubber flooring. During this four-week fast-track job, Shawmut worked 24 hours a day to complete the project as fast as possible, limiting any disruption to the hospital’s operating schedule; in fact, the project was turned over three days early. After completion, Shawmut also completed minor renovations to the other ORs in the suite. These improvements will help accommodate projected growth in NEBH surgical volume.

OR Staff Locker Room:
Shawmut converted underutilized space adjacent to the OR for use by the OR staff. The space was divided into separate men’s and women’s locker rooms, both with private showers, lockers, and changing rooms to accommodate up to 500 staff members.

New Ambulance Court:
Shawmut constructed a new ramp and entry canopy for ambulance patient drop-off. Previously, the ambulance patient drop off was located at the Main Entrance, which caused traffic congestion. The new ramp and canopy provides a separate private entrance for ambulance patients, and is located at the side of the building away from the Main Entrance.

Ongoing Work:

Atrium Project: Shawmut just completed construction of a new one-story addition, which is an infill of an existing interior courtyard. This project recaptured needed space for a new waiting and patient registration area. The construction area was located within a sensitive zone of the Hospital next to ICU and patient care areas, and noise and disruptions had to be kept to a minimum. Construction access on this project was challenging due to its central location inside the Hospital. This required the team to be in constant communication with the facility for deliveries, often requiring off-hour or weekend work. A second phase of this project included renovation of the former patient registration and waiting area into a new doctor’s conference room/lounge and dictation area and an expanded Surgical Staff lounge.

New Donor and History Walls:
Shawmut has also completed construction of a new Donor Wall for the Hospital. This glass and millwork display will run down the length of the main corridor and commemorate past, current and future donors. The History Wall, currently underway, is a graphic representation of highlights of the 113-year history of the Hospital. The display will include artifacts and actual photos from the past. The project is scheduled to be installed by April of 2007.

Pre-Operative Holding and Post-Operative Recovery Addition and Renovation:
Shawmut was recently awarded the contract for an addition and renovation project at the hospital. This project will include an addition and renovation to the pre- and post-operative suites. Not only is the phasing of this project complex, it also will involve extensive pre-construction investigation to coordinate connections to the existing mechanical systems.
