Boston and Providence - March 29, 2007 – Shawmut Design and Construction announced today that it has been awarded Phase One of the Bridge Building Overbuild expansion project at Rhode Island Hospital, a Lifespan partner. This significant win for Shawmut adds to the firm’s roster of healthcare and institutional clients and continues its strong momentum of securing more work in the growing Rhode Island market.
Phase One of construction - slated to begin later this month - will add three floors totaling 91,660 square feet to the top of the Bridge Building, the hospital’s newest building that was designed with such an expansion in mind. The Bridge Building, which houses the emergency department, a surgical suite and a parking garage, will add 110 new beds, 61 of which will replace the beds now in Jane Brown South. The new units in the building will be dedicated to telemetry and cardiac care as well as intensive care and general medical/surgical beds. Also included in Phase One construction is a dramatic 130-foot high, free-standing concrete tower, which will support a connecting bridge to the new patient floors. The three-phase project will ultimately increase the number of available beds by 49, increase the number of private room beds by 61 and take its oldest beds out of service.
“We are honored that Rhode Island Hospital selected Shawmut for this important project,” said Ron Simoneau, director of construction operations for Shawmut Design and Construction’s Rhode Island office. “Rhode Island Hospital is vital to the residents of the region, with the largest emergency department and the only Level 1 Trauma Center in the state, designed to accommodate an estimated 110,000 people in its emergency department annually, while also providing care for more than 32,000 inpatients each year. Shawmut’s experienced, passionate team will exceed the hospital's expectations throughout the construction process, and deliver an outstanding final project.”
At the end of construction, the hospital will have a total of 657 available beds, including 61 new private-room beds. The project is being designed by HOK, the award-winning firm that designed the Bridge Building, and a Lifespan Facilities Management group will execute the interiors.
Rhode Island Hospital, founded in 1863, is a private, nonprofit institution, a founding member of the Lifespan health system and the largest teaching hospital of Brown Medical School.
