Boston – March 30, 2007 – Shawmut Design and Construction received one of five 2007 Aon Build America Merit Awards announced by the Associated General Contractors of America (AGC) yesterday.
Shawmut received the prestigious award for their building renovation work on two marquee retail projects in New York City – Apple’s Fifth Avenue Flagship and Longchamp’s La Maison Unique Flagship.
“The Aon Build America Awards recognize the nation’s premier projects, large and small, from across the country,” said AGC CEO Stephen E. Sandherr. “The Build America Award winners embody the industry at its best and truly illustrate how AGC contractors are building America’s quality of life.”
The entrance of Apple’s Fifth Avenue flagship is a 32-foot glass cube enclosing a cylindrical glass elevator and a glass spiral staircase. Beneath is a 22,500 square foot open showroom complete with imported stone flooring and Japanese bead-blasted steel paneling.
Longchamp’s La Maison Unique in Soho is a 9,000 square foot flagship that includes a flowing steel staircase, peel down ceilings, and an outdoor terrace. The complex project involved extensive structural upgrades to the existing wood timber building in which it is located.
This year, AGC selected 15 winners and handed out five merit awards at a reception in San Antonio, TX. Entries were submitted from all areas of general contracting and winners were chosen by a group of industry peers evaluating on: “meeting the challenge of a difficult job; excellence in project management; contractor’s innovation in construction techniques; contractor’s state-of-the-art advancement; contractor’s sensitivity to the environment and surroundings; excellence in client service and the contractor’s contribution to the community.”
“We are honored to be recognized by the AGC for our work on the Apple Fifth Avenue and Longchamp Soho projects,” said Tom Goemaat, President and CEO of Shawmut. He added, “The success of these challenging projects is a result of the hard work and collaboration of the entire project teams, which included architect Bohlin Cywinski Jackson [Apple Fifth Avenue], designer Thomas Heatherwick, and architect Atmosphere Design Group [Longchamp La Maison Unique].”
This is not the first time the AGC has honored Shawmut. In 2006 the company won the Aon Build American Award in the “Building – Renovation category” for its multi-year expansion and renovation of Boston’s historic Trinity Church.
