Shawmut Design and Construction Lends Materials and Manpower to Restore Structures in Boston and Providence

Through their partnership with Rebuilding Together, Shawmut lends a hand to a Boston community center that services hundreds and a Providence family in need.

Boston, MA—April 26, 2008—Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, partnered with Rebuilding Together Boston and Rebuilding Together Providence, affiliates of the leading national non-profit preserving affordable homeownership and revitalizing communities, for the 20th Annual National Rebuilding Day. Shawmut provided materials and labor for the refurbishment of the Greenwood Memorial United Methodist Church and Community Center in Dorchester and a home in Providence last week.

In Boston, over 300 Shawmut employees and many other volunteers from the community provided the needed labor over the course of a week and a half. The project culminated in National Rebuilding Day on Saturday, April 26 when over 150 volunteers contributed time to the project. Boston Mayor Thomas Menino, Massachusetts State Senator Jack Hart, and Boston City Council Member Charles Yancey were also on site in Dorchester Saturday to offer their support of the amazing project and the many people donating their time to the community. The Greenwood Memorial United Methodist Church and Community Center has been a cornerstone for the Dorchester/Roxbury community for over 105 years, providing affordable and accessible community-based programs to more than 300 families. The scope of the project included removing and replacing all of the cedar shakes on the front of the church, excavation and installation of a 45-foot-long retaining wall, installation of three sets of stairs, new cabinets and sink in the kitchen, new light fixtures and acoustical ceilings in the community center, painting the entire exterior of the building, and landscaping.

In Providence, an 80-year-old home occupied by a mother, her daughter, and three grandchildren was refurbished. The work that over 50 Shawmut employees and other volunteers completed over the course of the week included painting, installing new light fixtures with energy saving bulbs, a new front door complete with weather-stripping and deadbolt, improving the heating system, trimming out the window sills, creating new front steps, adding lattice to the porch base, restoring gutters, and siding on three sides of the house.

This is Shawmut’s tenth year working with the Rebuilding Together affiliates. Rebuilding Together provides repairs free of charge to those in need, including building modifications, roofing, plumbing, and electrical repairs, enabling homeowners to live independently and renewing neighborhoods through community projects. Last week, more than 200 Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country and thousands of volunteers rehabilitated and improved homes and community centers for low-income Americans at no cost.

Without the generosity of numerous vendors and subcontractors these two projects would not have been possible: Lanco Scaffolding, James W. Flett Company, T&T Electrical Contractors, American Acoustical Contractors, D.R. Howard, American Equipment Rentals, American Architectural Iron, Buffets Inc., Steelco Chain Link Fence, North East Mechanical Associates, Arden Engineering Constructors, HIS Construction, MTG Disposal, Patriot Supply Corporation, and RELCO.
