A Busy Summer Ahead for Shawmut Design and Construction’s Retail Group

Construction of high-end retail boutiques, including Gucci, Roberto Cavalli, and Christian Dior, will be underway this summer.

New York, NY– June 23, 2008 Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, is in the midst of a busy summer construction season with many luxury retail stores across the nation. Shawmut has continued to grow its New York-based retail business with national and international retailers, relying on the firm’s commitment to delivering exceptional, personalized service to their clients.

Some current and upcoming projects include:

Christian Dior – Shawmut will begin work on their first Christian Dior project in July, a full renovation of the 57th Street flagship. Shawmut will be working in collaboration with designer Peter Marino & Associates and Gensler architects. This store adds to Shawmut’s impressive 57th Street resume, which includes Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Nokia, Burberry, Van Cleef & Arpels, and Nobu.

Yves St. Laurent – A new boutique in The Galleria located in Uptown Houston. The new store is the relocation of an existing store and construction began in early June. Features include glass and bronze storefront and a full millwork package at all wall and ceiling surfaces. Work on the new store will take place in a highly-trafficked mall environment over the course of approximately three months. The project architects are David A. Udkow and O’Neil Langan Architects. Shawmut has also built boutiques for Chanel and Burberry in The Galleria.

Moschino – Shawmut began work on their first store for Italian designer Moschino in late May. The flagship at 401 West 14th Street in New York City is expected to be completed on an 11-week, fast-tracked schedule. The store is located in the Meat Packing District and will feature an extensive storefront and lighting packages. Italian architects and designers Vudafieri Partners and DeuxL, along with Moschino’s artistic department, created the design concept for the store.

Joe’s Jeans – In late June, Shawmut will begin construction on the first retail store for Joe's Jeans. The brand will start their retail concept with a store in the Bucktown neighborhood of Chicago with additional locations planned later. Shawmut is helping the retailer to solidify a design and construction program for this first location, which will also serve as the basis for future stores. Construction is expected to be complete by early fall. The project architect is Wick Architecture & Design.

Roberto Cavalli – Shawmut will begin construction on Roberto Cavalli’s Bal Harbour, FL boutique in July. The store will be designed by Barteluce Architects and Associates.

Apogee Lifestyle – This 8,000 square foot, free-standing, three story pilates studio is located in White Plains, New York, and is the first location to be designed and built for the brand. Shawmut will begin construction in late June and the studio will include such finishes as a steel and glass feature staircase, bamboo wood accents throughout, a stainless steel elevator, retail area, and five pilates studios. The project architect is STUDIOS Architecture with design from DLDT Associates.

Gucci – Shawmut recently completed construction of the Palm Desert, CA location of Gucci in the El Paseo Shopping District. The store was built in a new development in the district over a 17-week schedule. Finishes include plexiglass rods running from the floor to the ceiling separating the sales floor, a bronze metal and aluminum storefront with 12 foot windows, and black nambia stone strip on the floor leading to a video unit displaying runway shows. The store’s architect and designer was Gensler.

Last December, Shawmut began construction on the San Francisco flagship Gucci with architect Atmosphere Design Group LLC. This location is expected to be complete by October.

Bulgari – In early May, Shawmut began construction of a Bulgari store in the Lenox Square Mall in Atlanta. Two Italian design architects, Studio Sclavi for a jewelry area and Studio Veresani for an accessories area, oversaw all design elements of the space. All millwork, stone, and marble was fabricated in Italy and installed on-site by Shawmut. The store is expected to be complete in August. The architect is Sawicki Tarella Architecture+Design.

Escada – Escada in the Americana Manhasset Mall is a complete renovation of the existing store expected to be complete by July. Escada is modernizing their current location to better serve their clients with updated changing rooms, updated heating and cooling systems, and modernized finishes like absolute black granite. The project architects are Gruen Associates.

Juicy Couture – Construction for the prestigious 5th Avenue flagship for this women’s retailer is expected to be complete in October. The project architects are Perkins Eastman Architects.

Bottega Veneta – In June, Shawmut began construction on a boutique in Tyson’s Galleria in McLean, VA for Bottega Veneta, a luxury retailer who specializes in signature leather goods. Construction is expected to be complete by August. The project architects are Mario Ciuffarin Architects. Shawmut has also completed work for Chanel and De Beers in Tyson’s Galleria.

These projects underscore the appeal of the U.S. retail market to international retailers. Despite the struggling economy, Shawmut’s portfolio of projects for international retailers continues to grow in 2008. Shawmut’s other high-end, international retail clients include Ermenegildo Zegna, Chopard, Louis Vuitton, Chanel, Burberry, and Anne Fontaine.
