Providence, R.I. – June 26, 2008 – Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, in collaboration with Goody Clancy, has broken ground on a 52,000 square foot academic building on the Roger Williams University campus in Bristol, R.I. This marks the first project that Shawmut has worked on for the University. The New Academic Building will be prominently located in the heart of campus, overlooking Mount Hope Bay. The future home of the University’s communications, foreign languages, and humanities departments, the building will provide a three-story glass atrium, new classroom space that reflects regional heritages, a multimedia production studio, a student newsroom, graphic design labs, a state-of-the-art language lab, and space for the Spiegel Center for Global and International Programs. The project will include challenges such as working in close proximity to residential and academic buildings and working on an occupied campus. Showcasing Roger Williams University’s commitment to sustainability, the New Academic Building is targeting LEED® Silver Certification. The project began in May with the demolition of the existing building, and construction is expected to be complete by June 2009. “When this facility opens in the fall of 2009, it will undoubtedly stand as the centerpiece building on our waterfront campus,” said Roger Williams University President Roy J. Nirschel. “Shawmut brings to the project a strong track record and a solid reputation—we’re happy to partner with them on such a major endeavor.” Shawmut has a rich history working on projects on academic campuses across New England, including projects such as Harvard University’s New College Theatre, Harvard Law School’s Wood Framed Houses at North Hall Site, Brown University’s Friedman Study Center, Yale University’s Sculpture Building, Tufts University’s Dame School conversion, and Rhode Island School of Design’s Fleet Library. Shawmut is currently working on Brown University’s Nelson Fitness Center, Yale University’s Greenberg Conference Center, Wheelock College’s Campus Center and Student Residence, and Tufts University School of Dental Medicine’s Vertical Expansion.
