Shawmut Design and Construction Set to Build at Two Ivy League Institutions

Shawmut will partner with Robert A.M. Stern Architects, LLP on buildings for Yale and Brown University

Boston, MA—July 08, 2008—Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, has been selected to build two buildings for Ivy League universities: the Brown University Nelson Fitness Center and University Swim Center, and the Yale University Greenberg Conference Center, both designed by Robert A.M. Stern Architects, LLP.

Robert A.M. Stern Architects’ extensive experience designing buildings that are in keeping with the aesthetic of the surrounding buildings on historic academic campuses worldwide will be complemented by Shawmut’s experience executing intricate design details and delivering the highest quality workmanship on academic campuses. Such projects include the recently completed Sculpture Building at Yale and Susan P. and Richard A. Friedman Study Center at Brown.

“We are thrilled to be working with such skilled and experienced architects as those at Robert A.M. Stern Architects,” comments Ron Simoneau, Managing Director of Academic projects at Shawmut. “Merging the high level of talent we both bring to the table will yield extraordinary results for Brown and Yale.”

The 85,000 square foot Nelson Fitness Center and University Swim Center will feature a three-court gymnasium, five fitness and dance studios, dedicated space for free weights and cardiovascular equipment, and a new quadrangle and a lobby atrium, which will serve as social gathering areas for students. On the site of the campus’ original Smith Swim Center, the team will design and construct an Olympic sized swimming pool, diving boards, a lobby, locker rooms, dry land training areas, and coaches’ offices. The project is expected to break ground in March 2009 and be completed in October 2010.

“After working successfully with Shawmut Design and Construction on major campus projects in the recent past, they were a natural choice for us as construction managers for our new fitness center,” commented Paul Dietel, Director of Project Management at Brown University. “We've been impressed with their attention to our goals, safety of our staff and students, and ability to navigate complex logistics throughout the construction. They've always stepped up and delivered, and we’re happy to be working with them once again.”

The 13,600 square foot Greenberg Conference Center, on target for LEED® Gold Certification, will provide a permanent and professional venue for internationally focused programs at Yale University. The facility’s design will incorporate flexibility in order to support other Yale events in additional to those with an international focus. The Center will feature a sloping amphitheater to seat 60 people, with translation and audiovisual booths, convertible to 80 seats by increasing the density of seating; a 30-seat divisible flat classroom with translation and audiovisual booths; and a dining room to seat 100. Construction is slated to begin in April of 2008 and be completed by May of 2009.
