Boston—February 8, 2006—Shawmut Design and Construction announced that it has completed three fitness facilities for Town Sports International, the largest health club company in the Northeastern United States. The facilities, all Boston Sports Clubs within the Boston-metro area, were completed concurrently on time and on budget within occupied office buildings. Town Sports International needed a partner that could manage the construction of three sports club fit-outs, while bringing a level of expertise and attention to detail to each jobsite. Shawmut brought its experience in constructing facilities in tight urban locations, particularly in occupied buildings, to the jobs.
The three completed Boston Sports Club locations are:
311 Arsenal St., Watertown: In addition to extensive structural work, including the relocation of building columns, to accommodate the swimming pool and waterproofing to accommodate the new fitness facility, Shawmut installed elaborate M/E/P systems and temperature controls and coordinated with owner's vendors to procure a vast amount of equipment. The facility includes a swimming pool; basketball court; aerobics, cycling, and mind & body studios; sauna; physical therapy, massage, and locker rooms; and open fitness areas.
501 Boylston St., Boston: Shawmut completed extensive structural work to create a support cradle for the new basement-level swimming pool and waterproofing to accommodate the new facility. The new health club includes aerobics, cycling, and mind & body studios; saunas; physical therapy, massage, and locker rooms; and open fitness areas.
560 Harrison Ave., Boston: Shawmut constructed the fitness facility -- complete with gunite swimming pool; aerobics, cycling, and mind & body studios; saunas; and massage and locker rooms -- in the basement of an occupied office building. To avoid disturbing the building’s tenants, the team performed potentially disruptive portions of the project during off-hours and carefully mitigated dust, vibration, and noise.
