Shawmut Building New Science Center at Milton Academy

Pritzker Science Center reaches mid-point of construction

Boston, MA – May 1, 2009 – Shawmut Design and Construction, a leading national construction management firm, recently reached the half-way-point of construction on the Pritzker Science Center project at Milton Academy, an independent co-educational boarding and day school in Milton, Massachusetts. Shawmut is partnering with architect William Rawn and Associates to create this 38,000 SF, two-story science center. Constructed of brick, glass and copper, the building will resonate well with its surrounding campus buildings and historic campus.

With this new science center, Milton seeks to make science a highly visible, sustainable, and integral component of learning, and reinforce the ideas of the centrality, visibility, and transparency of advanced science at the school. The new building will house 14 classrooms and 4 inquiry labs, as well as a large project room for student independent science projects. The building is designed with sustainable building practices and materials, a green roof, demonstration solar hot water and photovoltaic energy panels, FSC-certified wood products and a building "dashboard" program that will demonstrate real-time energy use and savings for classroom instruction.

Milton's eagerly anticipated Pritzker Science Center is currently scheduled to open in the fall of 2010.
