Boston, February 13, 2006—Shawmut Design and Construction recently completed construction of the Integrated Science, Engineering and Technology (ISET) Complex at the University of Hartford. The university selected Shawmut for its experience on institutional campuses and for its ability to complete complex addition and renovation projects within occupied settings. Designed by Boston-based William Wilson Associated Architects and Bard Rao + Athanas Consulting Engineers, the ISET Complex was completed over a phased, 19-month schedule. Shawmut worked closely with the owner and architect to perform phased, occupied renovations to 105,000 square feet of science classrooms, seminar rooms, and offices. The project also included a new 35,000-square foot biology and chemistry teaching facility that includes wet and dry lab space. Shawmut facilitated a thorough pre-construction phase that helped the team to study campus logistics, explore schedule options, and examine constructability issues in addition to performing detailed budgeting and scope development activities. Since the existing building had to remain open throughout the project, Shawmut seamlessly integrated construction of the new addition around occupied classrooms. As part of Shawmut’s commitment to putting students first, the project team gave architecture and engineering students guided tours of the job site as part of their curriculum. The revolutionary new classroom and laboratory facility will serve the College of Engineering, Technology, and Architecture, the College of Arts and Sciences, and the College of Education, Nursing, and Health Professions. |
