Boston, August 19, 2005—Shawmut Design and Construction was recently inducted into TREMCO’s Pinnacle Club for their efforts in partnering with TREMCO Commercial Sealants & Waterproofing to provide innovative solutions to construction and renovation challenges.
The challenges surfaced during the recent fit-out of Logan International Airport’s newly constructed Terminal A. The new terminal offers more than two-dozen concession and retail outlets. Being Logan Airport’s first truly “green” structure, materials used during construction were required to have very low or no volatile organic compounds in order to maintain the indoor air quality.
The restaurants built in Terminal A required a waterproofing system under their floors that could withstand the caustic bleaches and chemical used during cleaning that seep through the grout and tile. Standard systems typically used require three coats with two days between each and seven days after the third coat for a total of two weeks, which the schedule did not allow.
The innovative solution Shawmut developed involved using TREMCO’s Vulkem 360NF/351NF Pedestrian Deck Coating System, which forms a seamless elastomeric membrane system that is waterproof, easy to use, and resistant to caustic cleaning chemicals. It is specifically formulated for odor-sensitive applications. For the restaurants in Terminal A, Shawmut was able to apply this unique waterproofing solution in just three days – instead of the two weeks it typically takes to apply the standard systems.
Shawmut has extensive experience building restaurants across the country, witnessing first-hand the constant abuse restaurant flooring takes and exploring countless waterproofing solutions. For more than two years, Shawmut has utilized Vulkem 360NF/351NF in this unique manner for clients including The Cheesecake Factory, Legal Sea Foods, P.F. Chang’s China Bistro, and McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant.
Furthermore, Shawmut’s innovative use of Vulkem 360NF/351NF Pedestrian Deck Coating System alerted TREMCO employees to seek out other dual-use applications for their products not originally targeted. To help spur on similar innovation, TREMCO embarked on its “Superior Solutions Series” which recognizes companies that “take performance to new levels.”
