New York, NY—October 6, 2006— Shawmut Design and Construction, a $600 million national construction management firm, recently completed the construction of Ted’s Montana Grill on the ground floor of the Time-Life Building in the heart of Manhattan. Due to the restaurant’s occupation within the landmark 48-floor structure, Shawmut’s Restaurant Group, which specializes in challenging occupied renovations, was hired to construct this complicated space.
Shawmut partnered with architect GHA Architecture / Development to create a Craftsman-style restaurant that evokes the warmth and charm of an authentic Montana bar and grill, while keeping an eco-friendly, sustainable mission in mind. The 6,500 square-foot space keeps its faithfulness to the Arts & Crafts architectural style of the early 20th century by emphasizing the use of many natural materials. Architectural highlights include mahogany paneling, hickory wood floors, pressed tin ceilings, pendant lighting, metal crown moldings and unpolished brass accents.
“When we decided to bring our concept to Manhattan, my first concern was our inexperience with the requirements and restrictions of working on the island,” said Ed Bazor, Director of Construction, Ted’s Montana Grill. “I wanted to make sure we went with the most qualified General Contractor we could. After much research and investigation, I decided that Shawmut Design and Construction was the firm we would put our trust in to insure a successful build-out of our marquee facility. I am very pleased to announce that we could not have asked for a better firm to team up with than Shawmut.”
Shawmut’s expertise was fully utilized during the renovation, as the project team went to great lengths to mitigate dust and noise and only performed work during off-hours when limited business was being conducted within the busy building. Shawmut also had to carefully work above a photography lab which required the project team to carefully vent dust emissions away from the lab space and work around the lab’s complicated HVAC and air venting needs. Shawmut’s ability to remain flexible throughout the construction process enabled the project to stay on schedule and open on-time.
Specializing in the construction of fine dining, themed and national concept restaurants from coast to coast, Shawmut’s impressive client list includes The Cheesecake Factory, California Pizza Kitchen, Legal Sea Foods, McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood Restaurant, Kona Grill, Yard House, Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse, Jasper White’s Summer Shack, Excelsior, Davio’s, Grill 23 & Bar, ONO, per se, Masa & Bar Masa and Nobu 57.
