Boston, MA—October 12, 2006—Shawmut Design and Construction, a $600 million national construction management firm, has recently completed the restoration of the University of New Hampshire’s Thompson Hall’s clock tower, an icon for the University which includes a likeness of the tower within its logo. Working closely with Boston, MA-based architectural firm Goody Clancy, Shawmut has reached this significant milestone in the on-going restoration of the University of New Hampshire’s historic Thompson Hall. In addition to the clock tower, the scope of the overall project includes a full restoration of Thompson Hall’s masonry exterior, copper details, and slate roof; a window replacement project including lead paint abatement; and structural reinforcements on the main campus building. All work is scheduled to be completed by the targeted December 2006 turnover date.
Built in 1892, Thompson Hall is the only University of New Hampshire campus building on the National Registry of Historic Places. Shawmut collaborated with the New Hampshire Historical Commission to ensure that work complied with all regulations while restoring the building with the highest standard of quality. Shawmut also worked carefully around the site, which was occupied throughout construction by administrative staff, including the University President and Vice President.
The team sought vendors from around the world to achieve the highest quality result on this important and highly-visible project. From Star Kilns in North Carolina, the team obtained three thousand handmade bricks to mimic the unique styling of the original bricks that began deteriorating in recent years. The project team visited Quebec to find slate from the same vein as originally used when the Tower was constructed, and new wood windows were built using mahogany sustainably harvested in Africa. The highly visible Tower also received a fully restored weathervane and copper finials.
