Work Begins Marine Biological Laboratory Loeb Laboratory

$25 million project will transform Lab into state-of-the-art research-training facility in 13 months

Boston, MA – September 23, 2009 – Shawmut Design and Construction, a leading national construction management firm, in collaboration with architect Tsoi/Kobus & Associates, has begun work on a $25 million renovation of the Marine Biological Laboratory's (MBL's) central research training facility, the Loeb Laboratory. The project, based on MBL's campus in Woods Hole, Massachusetts, will transform the cornerstone of the MBL's world-famous life sciences training programs into a state-of-the-art facility that will serve as a national resource for science training and discovery.

The 13-month project will completely gut the building's 68,000 square foot interior, leaving only the exterior walls and floor plates in place, to create a thoroughly modern facility. The new facility will feature laboratories, offices, and support spaces as well as a rooftop mechanical room to house new equipment, and includes all new mechanical and life safety systems, a new roof, elevator upgrades and new entrances. The project will allow the MBL to bring all of their research-training programs into the building and create spaces designed for each discipline.

"We are honored to be part of this exciting and challenging project," said Shawmut Project Executive Tim Hurdelbrink. "As a one of our valued, repeat clients, the MBL will benefit from our understanding of their needs and concerns, in addition to our science and research construction experience and interior re-construction expertise."

Senate President Therese Murray, who spoke at the event, said "The renovation of the Loeb Laboratory at the Marine Biological Laboratory is an important factor in elevating Massachusetts' status in the life sciences industry. The Commonwealth's $10 million investment, coupled with the $15 million in private funds from the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, will enhance the state's life sciences training by enabling the MBL to dramatically improve its premiere educational training programs designed to groom scientists for jobs in the life sciences sector. I am delighted to support this initiative, which is a terrific example of how investments by the Commonwealth can reap great benefits and promote economic development."
