Shawmut Design and Construction Constructs Designer Art with Christian Dior Barricade on 57th Street

Construction Firm Builds Buzz on the Streets of New York

Boston, MA– Shawmut Design and Construction recently completed and unveiled a unique construction barricade for high-end retailer, Christian Dior on East 57th Street. In collaboration with Peter Marino Architects, Barteluce Architects & Associates and Christian Dior, the team constructed a 20-foot high quilted Dior purse with signature sterling silver logo that not only acts as a barrier while the store is under renovation, but has also turned into a tourist attraction.

Constructed to create chatter and excitement while the boutique is closed for renovations, the iconic, three-dimensional handbag is the first of its kind in the United States, boasting dimensions of 20-feet in height and 33-feet in width. Spring scaffolding created the sub-structure while the body of the purse and its handles are constructed of plywood with a vinyl graphic wrap.

The graphic 'quilted' texture on the wrap is so crisp that pedestrians can often be seen reaching out to touch the barricade to feel if it is truly tufted. The bottom of the purse is 10 feet deep and narrows to eight feet at the top allowing for lighting so that the purse glows from the inside at night. Adding to the real look and feel of the purse is its curved base constructed of curved metal panels so the purse looks as if it is carrying items.

"It's exciting to see this barricade on 57th Street," said Les Hiscoe, Vice President, Shawmut Design and Construction. "So many of our projects have innovative graphics, but to shape the barricade into such a recognizable icon really takes it to the next level. It's a fun way to kick-off the renovation project."

Shawmut utilized all local vendors to erect the purse and it will stay in place until mid- November when the renovation is scheduled to be complete in time for the holiday shopping season.
