34,000 Square Foot, Ground Up Addition Will Enhance Unique Partnership

Boston, MA – Shawmut Design and Construction, located at 560 Harrison Avenue in Boston, helped break ground on a new addition for the Codman Square Health & Education Center during a ceremony held on Wednesday, October 26.

Located at 637 Washington Street in Dorchester, MA, the project features a four floor, 34,000 square foot ground up addition to the existing building. Two floors will be dedicated to Codman Academy Charter School, and two floors will be dedicated to the Codman Square Health Center.

“Shawmut shares the sense of community put forth by the Codman Square Health & Education Center,” said Tom Goemaat, CEO of Shawmut. “As industry leaders in both the academic and healthcare and life sciences sectors, Shawmut is uniquely qualified to guide this project, and we are proud to work with an organization dedicated to touching so many lives.”

The Codman Square Health Center is a community-based, outpatient health care and multi-service center whose providers  serve over 100,000 patient visits  each year. Ten years ago, the Codman Academy Charter School was founded, and became the first and only school in the country housed in a community health center.

As one of the premier charter schools in Boston, Codman Academy Charter School boasts a 100 percent graduation rate, and a 100 percent college acceptance rate.

Thanks to its unique partnership, students from Codman Academy Charter School are able to intern in the Health Center, where they learn about medical topics including diet, hypertension and high-risk behavior. Administrators say this helps students become good health ambassadors in their homes and inner-city neighborhoods, and helps set some students on a career path in medicine.
