Boston, MA– Shawmut Design and Construction's Project Superintendent, Jack Fickes, of Oakhurst, New Jersey, was recently awarded with a Certificate of Appreciation by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey's Police Department for preventing the loss of life. Fickes was at the Port Authority overseeing Shawmut's build of Leisure Time Bowl, a new restaurant/entertainment venue within the Port Authority building, when he saw a young woman attempting to jump from the top level of the building, 100 feet above 8th Avenue and 40th Street. Fickes cautiously approached the young woman, who was extremely distraught, and was able to get close enough to speak to her. He was subsequently able to pull her to safety and hold onto her until police arrived. "We are so proud of Jack," said William Hughes, President of Shawmut Design and Construction. "Part of Shawmut's core values includes actively driving a safe and injury-free environment for co-workers, clients and the general public. Jack did just that when he intervened in what could have been a tragic situation." Fickes received the award from the Port Authority's Superintendent of Police/Director of Public Safety Michael Fedorko, "In recognition for your quick and selfless action which resulted in saving the life of a distraught woman at the Port Authority Bus Terminal," said Fedorko. "Your courageous behavior, without regard for your own safety, is to be commended and the Port Authority Police Department thanks you." |
