Shawmut Design and Construction is a national construction management firm with headquarters in Boston and offices in New York, Providence, Las Vegas, Atlantic City, and New Haven that builds exciting projects from coast-to-coast. Our main objective is delivering exceptional, personalized service to our clients. We accomplish this by truly listening to our clients’ goals and concerns as well as implementing comprehensive tools and services. Our unique business model allows our project teams to better service our clients by focusing their specialized expertise within one of the following areas: academic, commercial, corporate interiors, cultural and historic preservation, healthcare and science, gaming, restaurants, retail, and spas and health clubs. This approach also has allowed us to diversify as a company, attract the best people, and cultivate a team of expert project executives, project managers, superintendents, and estimators.
100% employee-owned company
Shawmut is 100% employee-owned which means each and every employee has a vested interest in the success of the company. It also means employees get to reap the financial benefits of being a part owner through the Employee Stock Ownership Plan (ESOP). The more Shawmut grows, the more the ESOP pool grows – which translates into more profitability for each staff member.
But we aren’t the only ones who benefit from ESOP—our clients do too. Think about it, most clients like to work directly with an owner because of the personalized service and a feeling of confidence that things will get done. Since each Shawmut employee is essentially considered an owner, our clients know that no matter who they deal with, each person will do their part to make every project a great success.
Company background
In 1982, Jim Ansara founded Shawmut with just a handful of employees and a unique vision for a construction company. Jim specialized in building projects with complex and difficult conditions (basically the types of projects other construction managers didn’t want), completing them on fast-track schedules, and providing exceptional customer service. The market responded positively to Jim’s refreshing approach to the construction process as Shawmut quickly set itself apart as one of New England’s most successful start-up companies.
Jim served as Shawmut’s President/Chief Executive Officer for 18 years before assuming the position of Chairman and handing the company reins over to Tom Goemaat. During his tenure as President/CEO, Jim established Shawmut as one of New England’s most respected construction firms and as an industry leader positioned within our market focuses. In 1989, Inc. magazine named Jim Entrepreneur of the Year in the construction category. Shawmut has been honored by the Governor’s Office of Massachusetts and Inc. magazine as one of “America’s Fastest Growing Private Companies” as well as a member of the “Inner City 100” Hall of Fame.
Today, with Tom Goemaat as CEO, Shawmut has become leading national construction firm. In addition to leading the company’s smart growth plan, Tom is focused on the development of Shawmut’s staff as well as the protection and proliferation of our unique culture. Over the last ten years, Shawmut’s revenues have grown 900% and the company has become one of the premier builders in New England and across the country.
