There is no question, we definitely do things differently here. We refer to our way of doing things as “the Shawmut way” – and our Values give a great explanation of what that means. Doing things the Shawmut Way is really part of our culture from our work ethic and giving back to the community, right down to how we relax and have fun. Below are just a couple initiatives that truly make us stand out from other construction companies.
Commitment to diversity
Shawmut is committed to building and sustaining a diverse workforce, and we have an active, company-wide diversity initiative to drive this process. We define diversity as valuing and leveraging differences among people. We believe a wide range of perspectives produces a more creative environment and facilitates better decision-making. In addition, our clients and business partners are increasingly diverse and we must understand and address their needs. Our goal is to have all members of Shawmut recognize, understand, appreciate, and use the diversity of our company to drive our success and the success of our clients and business partners. And, we strive to use our skills in diversity to continue to make Shawmut a great place to work for everyone! For more information on our extensive diversity initiative, click here.
Lending a helping hand
We haven’t forgotten where we came from (a small company in the heart of Roxbury) and that’s why we feel very strongly about giving back to the community. The Shawmut Community Outreach Providers (SCOP) work with local organizations to provide charitable outlets for our staff members. To us it’s about more than just donating money – it’s about going out into the community and really making a difference. In the past we have volunteered materials and labor to renovate non-profits, neighborhood daycare and community centers, as well as teach local school children about the building process, opened our doors to provide meeting space to community groups, and partnered with community groups to effect change right in our own backyard.
Some of the organizations with which we regularly work include Rebuilding Together Boston, Room to Dream Foundation, Summer Search Boston, CANstruction, the Greater Boston Food Bank, and Children's Trust Fund.
Green initiatives
Shawmut is active in the areas of green building practices and sustainable design. Awareness of these issues continues to grow daily among our clients, industry partners, and staff members. Waste reduction, material recycling and reuse, energy conservation, and indoor air quality are a few of the topics which our Green Committee tackles. This group of interested staff members promotes the efforts of The US Green Building Council and facilitates the adoption of its recommended green building practices within our office and on our jobsites. From the operations perspective, Shawmut has several LEED-accredited professionals on staff who have the capability to work with our clients, architects, and engineering teams to establish LEED checklists and feasibility studies, evaluating each item for proper material use and the costs associated with a specific program. We can then work with the teams to monitor and track compliance as the project progresses.
