The culture at Shawmut is what makes it an amazing company to work for. Starting as an intern and then transitioning to the CMST Program, I was surrounded by welcoming and knowledgeable people that supported me and each other. Shawmut is creating more well-rounded individuals and teams who stand out to clients as more confident, helpful, and dedicated.

The advice I’d give to someone starting a career in construction is to maintain a strong desire to learn. Regardless of where you are in your career, staying up to date is crucial as the industry constantly evolves with new technologies and regulations. In the end, if you are a hardworking and determined individual you will succeed in the company.

The best piece of advice I would give to someone starting a career in construction would be that it’s okay to make mistakes. The best part of the CMST program is that it was created to be a learning platform supported by your project team. You’re not expected to have all the answers, but to ask questions along the way to develop a catalogue of knowledge for the success of both future projects and your career.

My experience working at Shawmut has been very rewarding. After coming into the CMST program with no construction background, it feels great to problem solve with the skills and knowledge I have gained while working at Shawmut. Learning from my peers and team members has allowed me to build confidence in my construction knowledge, as well as my problem-solving abilities.

Coming out of college, I wasn’t sure what discipline I wanted to settle on. The CMST program is only 3 years, which gave me enough insight to decide what the correct career path I wanted to pursue.

What I love about working for Shawmut is the sense of community and the support system that is the backbone of the company. Starting out as a CMST in the workplace, I always felt that I could go to anyone in the company with questions, and that sharing my ideas was not only encouraged, but valued.

At the end of my first project with Shawmut, I was given the opportunity to temporarily relocate to Chicago, IL, for a truly unique project. The project involved a complex façade retention of a shopping center built in the 1920s, and being a part of preserving its history was an incredible experience. Accepting this position was one of the best decisions I’ve made, as it not only allowed me to gain invaluable experience but also provided the opportunity to live in a new and vibrant city like Chicago, immersing myself in its diverse culture and rich history has been a great experience.

My favorite part of the CMST program has been the opportunity to experience a construction project from different roles. Each rotation has allowed me to see the construction process from a new perspective, making me a more well-rounded builder with a holistic view on how all the parts of a project come together.

One of the best things about the culture here at Shawmut is that everyone is willing to lend a hand when you are struggling with something. In the field and office, everyone is juggling many things at once. Throughout my time in the CMST program, I have not heard one person turn me away when I have asked for help. Each team wants their members to grow, learn, and be effective teammates with the common goal of pushing each project to success.

I am a member of the New York Regional Safety Committee! This means I help with planning the NY Region’s Annual Safety Week firsthand with our Regional Safety Director, Safety Managers, and fellow colleagues. This has been able to broaden my understanding on safety and spread awareness regarding safety related topics to all Shawmut employees.
