How Employee Ownership Shapes a Great Place to Work

At Shawmut, being 100% employee-owned means our people share in the success they help create. That sense of ownership shapes how teams support one another, approach their work, and deliver for clients and communities. Guided by our values of excellence, safety, ownership, and people, we’re committed to a workplace where everyone has the opportunity to grow and contribute.

We put that commitment into practice through resources that support physical and mental well-being, flexibility that helps people balance work and life, and opportunities for mentorship and career development. Just as important are the everyday experiences that define a workplace: colleagues who lend a hand, leaders who invest in their teams, and pride in what we accomplish together.

To hear how that culture is experienced across Shawmut, we asked four leaders from our People Strategies and HR teams what they hear most often about working here.

“What I hear most often is that Shawmut consistently hires and retains people who genuinely care. Because we’re an ESOP, there’s a real sense of ownership that comes through in the care people bring to their work, their clients, and one another. Our culture truly differentiates us, and that’s a message I consistently hear from both current and former Shawmut employees.”

“What I hear most often is simple: our people care. Being part of an ESOP creates a shared sense of ownership and pride, and that shows in how people work and how they treat one another.”

“If you ask anyone what makes Shawmut so special, they’ll tell you it’s the people. I hear it all the time: everyone wants to see you succeed, colleagues are always ready to lend a hand, and leadership actually practices what they preach when it comes to investing in us.”

“The resounding answer is the people. Employee-owners consistently speak to the strong relationships they have with their colleagues, the willingness to help one another, and the genuine sense of teamwork across the organization. There is also a shared sense of pride in the work we do, which can be felt in the care, commitment, and quality people bring to everything they do. This sentiment ties back to the ESOP and our shared goal of Shawmut’s success.”
