As a 100% employee-owned company, our success is driven by the dedication and passion of our 1,500 employee-owners nationwide. We know our future success starts with investing in our people, which is why we are committed to developing talent from within and creating meaningful opportunities for our employee-owners to learn, grow, and build their careers.
At the heart of our culture of continuous learning is our Leadership Development Program. The program is designed to help employee-owners strengthen their leadership skills, prepare for greater levels of responsibility, and take the next step in their careers. Through meaningful experiences, hands-on learning opportunities, and interactive sessions, participants develop skills in areas like strategic thinking, decision-making, and inclusive leadership—all while learning how to better lead and inspire others, drive business goals, navigate change, and increase engagement.
This fall, 26 employee-owners from across the country are beginning their one-year leadership development journey. They’re joining a growing network of 50 program alumni who now serve in impactful roles throughout Shawmut.
As our newest cohort takes this next step, we asked several Leadership Development Program graduates to reflect on their own experiences and share the lessons they’ve carried with them. From the value of different perspectives to becoming more intentional about their own growth, here’s what they had to say.

What is one lesson from the Leadership Development Program that you’ve put into practice in your day-to-day work?
“The value of drawing on the experience and perspectives of those around me. Leadership is less about having all the answers and more about knowing how to bring people together to find the best solution. I’m now more intentional about seeking out different perspectives and bringing the right people into conversations.”

How has the Leadership Development Program influenced the way you approach your role, your career, and your responsibilities as an employee-owner?
“The program reinforced that personal success is tied to the success of those around you. It’s influenced how I approach my role by focusing on continued growth, strong collaboration and alignment to achieve our shared goals. When everyone is performing at a high level, we all win.”

What attributes or values are most essential for thriving and becoming a leader at Shawmut?
“The best leaders lead by example through ownership, curiosity, and care for people. Leadership isn’t about hierarchy—it’s about having a stake in the outcome, whether that’s preparing for an interview, building a client relationship, or helping your team grow.”

How has the Leadership Development Program influenced the way you approach your role, your career, and your responsibilities as an employee-owner?

What attributes or values are most essential for thriving and becoming a leader at Shawmut?
“Successful leaders consistently demonstrate ownership, build trust through their actions, and put team success above individual achievement. They are willing to learn, seek feedback, and help others succeed.”
