How Shawmut Builds a Culture of Safety

At Shawmut, safety is core value embedded into our culture, and our people are deeply committed to creating a work environment that goes above and beyond requirements.

That’s why our safety slogan is more than a mandate—it’s a mindset. Safety is woven into everything we do—ensuring the more than 40,000 people who step onto our jobsites each year have the resources, support, equipment, and mindset needed to work safely and perform at their best. Our number one priority is ensuring everyone goes home safe—and better.

As part of our 17th annual Safety Week celebration, we asked our regional safety leaders what our world-class culture of safety looks like in action and how, as employee-owners, they personally contribute to driving it forward for our project teams nationwide.

What does a world-class culture of safety look like in action—and as an employee-owner, how do you personally contribute to it?

World-class safety is built before work even begins. It is demonstrated through careful planning, strong collaboration, and disciplined execution, where hazards are controlled, housekeeping is maintained, teams are consistently engaged, and there is a strong commitment to total worker health, including mental well-being and fatigue management.

As an employee-owner, I help set this standard by embedding proactive planning, strong risk controls, and accountability into every project from preconstruction through closeout, while championing a culture of continuous improvement where everyone speaks up, takes action, and looks out for one another.

World-class safety is pretty simple. It’s about taking care of your people—making sure they have the resources they need, building trust, and helping them feel supported both on and off the jobsite.

As employee-owners, we’re responsible for each other’s health and well-being and for ensuring every person goes home safe.

A world-class safety culture in action starts with open and honest communication among our trade partners, project teams, and clients. Every partner brings different needs and perspectives, and the best safety solutions come from aligning those early and building the plan together.

As an employee-owner, I take personal responsibility for creating that alignment—starting the right conversations, building trust, and helping teams plan the work and work the plan so everyone goes home safe.

A world-class culture of safety is when project teams put safety first—when challenges come up, they solve them the right way because that’s simply how we work. It’s about making the safe choice every time, no matter the situation.

As an employee-owner, I get to share my passion for safety while helping set that standard every day, making sure everyone who steps onto our jobsites goes home better than when they arrived.

As an employee-owner and safety professional, I take personal responsibility for helping prevent incidents before they happen and making sure every person goes home safely to their loved ones.
