How Shawmut Invests in the Next Generation of Builders

At Shawmut, we believe investing in early-career talent is an investment in the future of our company and our industry. Through hands-on experience, mentorship, and meaningful opportunities to contribute, our internship program helps students build the skills, relationships, and confidence needed to launch successful careers in construction.

This summer, 55 interns representing 34 colleges across 15 states joined teams across the country, gaining real-world experience in project management, site supervision, estimating, safety, and internal operations. As they work alongside experienced employee-owners, they’re developing technical expertise while experiencing Shawmut’s collaborative, people-first culture firsthand.

In celebration of National Intern Day, we asked several of our current employee-owners—who began their own Shawmut journeys as interns—to share advice for making the most of the internship experience. From embracing new opportunities to building relationships and staying curious, here’s what they had to say.

What advice do you have for current interns to make the most out of their internship at Shawmut?

“Expose yourself to as many roles and facets of the job as possible. Get into the field often to learn onsite, and ask plenty of questions—especially directly to our trade partners, who have so much expertise to share.”

What advice do you have for current interns to make the most out of their internship at Shawmut?

“Practice and hone your interpersonal skills. Building relationships and communicating effectively are just as important as developing technical skills because our job is to bring people together to achieve a common goal.”
