Shawmut Named Rhode Island’s #1 Fastest Growing Company by Providence Business News

Shawmut has been named the #1 Fastest Growing Company in Rhode Island by Providence Business News, recognizing a period of significant growth and expansion across the state. The ranking, announced as part of PBN’s 2026 Fastest Growing & Innovative Companies program, reflects Shawmut’s 110% increase in Rhode Island revenue from 2023 to 2025.

“Our growth has been fueled by a deliberate strategy to diversify our portfolio while building on our long-standing strengths and partnerships,” said Chris Maury, head of Rhode Island operations and head of preconstruction for Shawmut’s New England region. “While Shawmut has traditionally been a leader in private higher education construction in Rhode Island, we’ve intentionally expanded into new markets, including RIDE K-12 public schools, select luxury residential projects, and advanced manufacturing and industrial facilities.”

That diversification has allowed Shawmut to pursue increasingly complex projects while strengthening relationships across its client base. More than 80% of Shawmut’s work comes from repeat clients—a reflection of the trust built through project delivery, collaboration, and long-term partnership.

Nowhere has that growth been more visible than in Rhode Island’s public K-12 market. After years of pursuing opportunities and building an understanding of the priorities of school districts and communities, Shawmut established a strong foothold within the Rhode Island Department of Education’s school construction program. Today, the firm is working on sixteen active or recently completed RIDE projects across seven districts.

“Every unsuccessful opportunity we pursued helped us better understand the clients’ priorities and the unique needs of the communities these schools serve,” Maury said. “Once we secured our first project, we built on that success through strong project delivery, meaningful community engagement, and a commitment to serving both our clients and the communities.”

That community focus is central to Shawmut’s approach across Rhode Island. Project teams regularly engage students, faculty, neighbors, and local organizations through classroom visits, jobsite tours, educational programming, milestone events, and hands-on learning opportunities designed to make construction more accessible and visible.

The work also supports a broader industry priority: developing the next generation of construction talent. With the industry facing a growing skilled-worker shortage, Shawmut is using its K-12 partnerships to introduce students to the range of careers available across construction, architecture, engineering, and the trades.

“By helping students understand the wide range of rewarding careers available in construction, we’re investing in the future of our industry while strengthening the communities where we build,” Maury said.

Looking ahead, Shawmut plans to continue its disciplined growth across Rhode Island and New England by deepening existing client relationships, expanding strategically into sectors with long-term demand, and investing in the people and leadership needed to support larger and more complex work.

“Our employee-owned culture has always been one of our greatest strengths,” Maury said. “We’re committed to developing the talent and expertise needed to support larger, more complex projects while maintaining the high level of service our clients expect.”
