Boston, MA – May 20, 2008 – Shawmut Design and Construction (www.shawmut.com), a leading national construction management firm, in collaboration with architects Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, last week completed the much anticipated Apple flagship store on Boylston Street in Boston. At approximately 20,000 square feet, it is the largest Apple store in the U.S. and second largest in the world.
The three floor glass-front store opened on Thursday and faces one of the city’s busiest streets in Boston. This marks one of 10 high profile Apple stores opened in urban, high traffic locations. The glass façade, simple in appearance yet incredibly complex structurally, hangs from the roof on glass L-shaped beams/columns allowing for maximum infiltration of natural light. A mix of Apple’s signature materials used in other stores, such as a gray stone floor, can be found on the interior. A large Apple icon hangs from the storefront and is illuminated at night. A feature spiral staircase made entirely of glass connects the store’s three floors, bringing shoppers from the Mac display on the first floor, to the iPod and iPhone selection on the second floor, and finally the “Genius Bar,” and other customer service stations, on the third floor. A green roof helps cool the building in the summer and helps keep the store insulated in the winter.
