Welcome to Owner Impacts, a series dedicated to showcasing innovations, solutions, and leadership driven by our employee-owners—and powered by our people-first culture.

In celebration of National Hispanic and Latine/x Heritage Month, several of our Hispanic and Latine/x employee-owners from across the country shared insights about their heritage and advice on how to become an ally to the community. Here’s what they said.

How has your Hispanic heritage influenced, contributed, or shaped your career or life?

“My Hispanic heritage has meant the world to me. I come from Puerto Rican and Cuban descent and my grandparents came to New York with a dollar and a dream. For generations, my family has worked hard to give their children more, to make a difference, and see the fruits of their labor blossom into success. This has influenced my work ethic, empowered me to reach goals others have considered impossible, and aligned me with my purpose to pave the way for not only my family but for others who look like me.”

What can those outside of the community do to become better allies?

“Get involved and learn to engage in conversation with and about the community. Everyone can benefit greatly from this, but it is especially important in the construction industry as a large percentage of the workforce is Hispanic and Latine/x.”

How has it been beneficial to be Hispanic and Latine/x in this industry?

“One in three workers in the U.S. construction industry are Hispanic and Latine/x. Being American with Hispanic heritage in the construction industry means adapting to two cultures in the same work environment. My heritage has been an advantage for me because being bilingual creates a bond with other people, which helped me establish many relationships in the industry.”

How has your Hispanic heritage influenced, contributed, or shaped your career or life?

“It was hard to assimilate to the language and the culture when I moved to the U.S. I was motivated to keep going by using the lessons my mom instilled in me—achievements earned with hard work have the most value; never give up when something seems hard; and always take pride in what you do no matter how long it takes. I am grateful to be part of a company that values the hard work of its employees, and my heritage helps me do my best every day—even as I take on something new or challenging.”

How has it been beneficial to be Hispanic and Latine/x in this industry?

“Being Hispanic and Latine/x and bilingual in this industry has allowed me to bring a diverse perspective to my team. I’ve built relationships throughout my career since I can personally relate to a large demographic of workers in our industry.”
